Instructions on how to become a certified official with the USATF
Membership & Compliance
- USATF Membership → Join or Renew Here
- SafeSport Training → Complete Training
- Background Screening (required every 2 years) → Start Here
- Rules Reviews → Access Here
- Specialty officials (Implements, LDR, Racewalk, Combined Events, etc.) may complete their additional reviews here.
- Master Officials must complete 8 questions, National Officials 5 questions (including 1 Starter question) for the new Olympiad season.
- There are 29 questions to choose from.
Certification Steps
- Certification Fee – $20
- To pay: Go to your officials certification status, click on the Invalid or Lapsed tab. This will open the payment screen.
- Certification Application → Apply Here
- Recent Photo
- No hats, no sunglasses
- White or beige background
- Passport-style (this photo will be on your badge)
- Resume → Upgrade Checklist Resource
- Used for upgrades and for adding events to the back of your ID card
Additional Expectations
- Must be 18 years or older
- Code of Ethics & Performance Guidelines compliance required
- Association Training is recommended for all who are seeking upgrades.
- This includes Zoom sessions, in-person training posted by the Certification Chair, or verified training from USATF with proof of attendance.
